Meet Julia :)

A little bit about me:

Hello, my name is Julia Allman, and I am a public relations major with a pre-law certificate. I took this class to learn more about how to utilize social media and what information coincides best with what social media platform. Because social media is such a prominent part of today’s society, I hope to learn more about how to use it within the profession I will be entering.

My usual approach to projects for school or work is to write out a plan of attack, that outlines everything I need to get done. Then I start gathering all the information I will need and creating different subgroups for it. From there, I follow my plan which breaks down the different components of the project.

Something I would like people to know about me is I recently became a vegetarian, which sparked a major interest in cooking. I have been learning how to introduce more protein in my diet, as I now don’t eat meat. I have been learning how to use tofu in a myriad of recipes, and have discovered food like chick-pea pasta, which is high in protein. Substitutions like that ensure I get the proper amount of protein and have made cooking more fun and exciting.

What I hope to learn:

There is a multitude of things I hope to learn this semester throughout the course. One of the biggest ones is how to utilize social media platforms in the most efficient way, learning which platforms are best for what information and campaign. I also hope to learn how to further develop my own professional social media, such as Linkedin, so that I can use it more efficiently. I also hope to learn more about calculating the impact posts and activity has on social media, so I can get a better idea of if a campaign or social media account is being used efficiently.

 What I have learned:

One of the major things I learned through the global pandemic is to take more chances and put myself out there. The pandemic taught me that life can change very quickly, so I should start to take more chances. This isn’t just with bigger life decisions, but smaller everyday situations that I would have handled differently before. Instead of doing a workout video at home, I sign up for yoga and spin classes at a studio. I push myself to talk more in class and be more involved with activities on campus. It is really what pushed me to join a sorority freshman year, which is how I met some of my best friends. This new mindset also gave me the confidence to take a leadership role in my sorority, which has taught me about managing high-conflict situations and balancing my schoolwork with the work from this position.

This new mindset, pushing myself to be in situations that may make me uncomfortable, has taught me more about what I can handle. New experiences don’t seem as intimidating as before, and I gained so many incredible opportunities and experiences from them. It taught me confidence that allowed me to pursue law school post-graduation, and take on an internship this semester. I decided to pursue an internship at a non-profit organization, The Shortest Line, where I am working to help them with their public relations strategies and marketing. I was very apprehensive to pursue this because I still feel that there is a lot for me to learn. While this is a new situation that is out of my comfort zone, I am excited to apply what I have learned so far throughout my education and gain experience in the field.
