Mobile Advertising
Mobile Advertising-BennyG
With the amount of time and people on their mobile devices, it was inevitable that advertisement would soon be incorporated with such an accessible medium. We see banners, pop ups, push notifications, and SMS messages on a daily basis where companies are trying to expose us to their products or services. Mobile advertising has become an integral part of the way people experience the marketplace in the modern age.
So What???
Mobile advertising serves equally to both the distributer and the consumer. For example, say Cheezit is coming out with a new flavor (honey siaracha) and they decided to post mobile advertisements in order to spread the word on their dope new cracker. Upon seeing this advertisement, I, an oddly obsessed Cheezit fan, see this post while scrolling through social media. I drop my phone, grab my keys, and rush to the nearest retailer to get my hands a box of this mysteriously hot drop. By utilizing mobile advertising, Cheezit has succeeded in persuading me to purchase their product, thus ultimately satisfying the consumer while profiting themselves. Win-Win. By this analogy, we can determine that mobile advertising is an integral factor in the consumer process on both sides of the register, but even more so pertaining to online shopping.
Although mobile advertising is a good way to get people into the stores, it is even more effective with online retailers. Especially since the pandemic, mobile advertisement offered a virtual shopping cart to the public which never leaves their pocket. Additionally, our phone’s algorithms recognize what our interests are, thus showing us ads for products we are most likely to buy, therefore making it increasingly difficult to resist temptations. As stated in an article by Will Kenton: “Ads are tailored based on consumer tastes and/or browsing history using data mining and other information gathering techniques”.
Mobile Majority
Mobile use has become the leading medium for consumption of media, meaning most of us spend most of our “digital time” on our phones. With this in mind, companies can exploit the opportunity to cater their marketing towards the mobile crowd. One concept similar to this notion is Mobile-first indexing. As written by Bridget Randolph, Mobile-first indexing is the way search engines will filter search results to offer mobile variants of websites/online destinations. Being that the internet leans heavily towards mobile activity, companies can take advantage of the fact that the easiest way to get their name in front of people is through their smartphones.
Closing Statements
Mobile Advertising has become a consistent element of the online experience and serves many purposes to thousands of businesses and consumers alike. We are constantly connected to this content which recognizes us personally, tailors feeds towards our interests, and enables users access to a vast amount of markets, opportunities, and services, all one click away. The user experience has been significantly optimized by this method of marketing as mobile advertising is likely to be seen at any given time someone uses their cellular device, ultimately maximizing the likelihood that someone will view an add, investigate, and purchase an item or service.
