What is Mobile engagement?

The mobile experience as we know it
Do you find yourself scrolling through social media on your mobile device, lost in the rabbit hole of bright colors, soft shapes, and interactive interfaces? If the answer is yes, then you have been a byproduct of mobile engagement. We have all experienced the captivating environment that lives beneath our screens, and we can agree that apps, websites, and media on mobile platforms are designed to capture and stimulate our minds.
The content we see from Facebook to Instagram has been carefully designed with certain branding, aesthetic, and format qualities in mind which as a viewer, we are naturally attracted to. For example, most apps, buttons, and window displays across mobile devices are designed with shapes that have rounded corners and soft edges.
The reason for this is because the designers interpreted the configuration through the lens of a child. In the real world, pointed corners are sharp and dangerous, while rounded edges promote safety, which ultimately led to the decision to make mobile apps have round corners. Even for a design as simple as corners, the designers take deep thought while executing their decisions.
On a larger scale, look at Snapchat as a leading example of mobile engagement. Snapchat checks all the boxes for mobile engagement because it has excellent branding, a user-friendly design, hyper-connectivity, and high interactivity. Snapchat’s signature bright yellow pallet is already a great example. Yellow is the most attractive color to the human eye, acting almost as a magnet, we are drawn directly toward it. From your home screen, Snapchat stands out even from a folder. Furthermore, Snapchat’s camera filters and editing capabilities make for extremely creative and engaging services which social media companies strive for.
As mentioned by Meghan Tocci in her article about mobile engagement, “The share of Americans that own smartphones rose above 90% in 2018, up from 35% back in 2011”. This statistic should demonstrate the scale of mobile device users and the rate at which people had increased their activity in only a seven-year time span. With this information, we can begin to understand the vast market that mobile developers must cater to. Mobile engagement is the key for those developers to appeal to the masses. Regardless of the company itself, mobile engagement aims to advance the overall experience of the platform.
