The World of Display Advertising

What is Display Advertising?

According to an article on acquisio.com, display advertising is when the audiences of social media sites and websites are shown ads, usually text based images, that call them to an action. These companies pay for their advertisements to be shown on websites, and in return, they get traffic on their own websites and products.

Upsides

Display ads can be a useful tool for companies to utilize to their benefit. There are a lot of different things that can be done with display advertising. Companies can alert consumers about a new sale they have, or just simply show why and how they are better than the competition. Also, the huge audiences of social media make for a smart business investment.

Downsides

The main downside of display advertising is the ad blocker system. Most computers nowadays have ad blockers that render display ads useless by simply blocking them from users. Another major downside that goes along with that is the fact that many consumers have grown accustomed to simply ignoring any ads in the margins of social media and websites.

Utilization

When someone thinks of display advertising, they might think of a form of ads that get in the way of the content consumers actually want. Some might think that these ads take up valuable screen space, However, a study done by SEMrush shows that the ads used by both publishers and advertisers are smaller than what people may think.

Native Advertising

The alternative to display advertising is native advertising. Native ads are intended to look more blended into the content, unlike the direct in-your-face objective of display ads. Native ads can be seen on pretty much all social media outlets. On Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, etc., there are advertisement posts tucked into people’s everyday feeds. While display ads are meant to stand out and grab the consumer’s attention, native ads have a more stealthy feel, and people don’t always realize that what they are reading is actually an advertisement.

Overall, companies know that display ads can be a smart investment, as long as they use them the right way. Display ads can be a tricky process, so publishers and advertisers have to be very careful when selecting what they think will attract their next customer.
