Who Needs a Camera Anyways? iPhone Photography for Social Media
By: Kailey Lane
Technology Advances
Technology is always ever-changing, but with development, comes advancement. From the first ever iPhone, to now the most recent iPhone 13 Pro, there have been increasingly dramatic changes. One of the most evident, from my point of view, has been the development of the camera technology.
Now, with better cameras comes better photos and more like-able Instagram posts! This picture below is the difference between a photo taken on an iPhone 1 vs an iPhone 11, and the difference is unbelievable. Now that we know we have amazing camera quality, let’s chat about some useful tips and tricks to get the most Instagram-able photos to wow your feed.
What Do YOU Want to Post
To start, let’s chat about the goal of your post. What do you want to accomplish? Do you want to theme match for your feed? Showcasing a particular item? Whatever your goal is, I am here to give tips and tricks to help you accomplish your goals.
Set the Scene
Backgrounds! When posting a photo, it is important to have a good background that matches or emphasizes your photo. If you are showcasing an individual’s item you would like to emphasize, white backgrounds normally make it pop and stand out, making it the full focus of the image. For example, if you want to post a photo of your brand-new pair of shoes, a white background will enhance the colors, as well as make it the sole focus of the photo.
Pending on what you are posting, the background can change. Say you want to showcase a brand-new cookie recipe you just made, and you are adamant about sharing it on your food-sta-gram. One of the best settings or backgrounds for that photo would be in the kitchen. This way the aesthetic of the photo increases because the background matches the foreground, aka, the delish cookies.
It’s All About the Lighting
Next, it’s important to have good lighting. Sometimes the lighting can cause a photo to be overexposed, which means there is too much light, and the photo appears too bright. On the other hand, if there is not enough light, your photo will be underexposed, meaning it is too dark. Some of the best lighting to use is natural light, but when in doubt, artificial light works too. For those who are savvy influencers or take their social media seriously, some may use a ring light for the best lighting. This is simply just a circular light that has many different colors of light, to make sure the tone of the photo matches the aesthetic you’re going for.
Angles Are Everything
Additionally, let’s talk about angles. Sometimes, the angle of the photo is everything. Through different angles, we can create different effects on the photos. If you want to look a little taller, take the photo from an angle a little lower to elongate your legs. If you want to emphasize the beauty of your favorite necklace, get a close up shot where it only focuses on the jewelry itself. Emphasize the
Add a Personal Flare with Filters
Lastly, filters. Editing apps such as VSCO and Lightroom have been heavily popular in today’s social media editing circle. These apps can allow you to selectively edit your photo to change color, angles, lighting, vignette and more. Some influencers even have the same filter they apply on all their photos to make their feed more cohesive and flow better.
Sending your most recent picture to Instagram now may have a different approach. When posting, make sure to consider these tips and tricks to enhance your social media feed.
