Consumer Habits During a Pandemic
- By Natalia Tanner
COVID-19 has changed the way many people all around the world do things, including shopping. Over the course of the pandemic, many people got used to ordering nearly everything they needed online, this being having it delivered towards their own home or picking it up at the store.
Why?
A study provided by professionals about this situation stated that consumer behavior towards necessities was predicted by anxiety and covid related fear, whereas consumer behavior toward non-necessities was predicted by depression. The study stated that pandemics and natural disasters are highly stressful situations, which can easily induce negative emotions and adverse mental health states, such as perceived lack of control and instability, which are core aspects of emergency situations, that contribute directly to stress.
This directly correlates with the high consumer demand that the pandemic induced. The graphs below provide an overview of this trend.
This shift in consumer habits leads to changes revolving surrounding the improvement of this industry. Among the changes was greater use of shopping apps, mobile checkout, and in-store pickups.
Along with this improvement in website checkouts, another trend seen during the pandemic where a lot of small businesses rising up and making their mark in the consumer industry due to other platforms giving them the tools for digital marketing. Among these tools were Tiktok, Instagram, Etsy, Pinterest, etc. All of these platforms played a big role in the COVID-19 shopping trends, they provided the means for the use of internal links within their community which I believe also lead to a lot of consumer traffic for a lot of small businesses.
What are links?
Internal links, or links that connect internal pages of the same domain. They are considered a currency in the Internet world, that provides internal links pointing to a particular page on your site. Internal links played a key component part when it came to consumer habits during the pandemic, providing businesses the opportunity of expanding their audience.
