Improving Your Mobile SEO

By: Alyssa Battaglia

First thing’s first, what is a SEO?

SEO stands for search engine optimization and it is the practice of improving the content on your website to achieve a higher ranking on search engine pages such as Google and Bing. The goal is to improve organic traffic which is traffic to your site through searches on a search engine page.

Mobile searches have been, and still are, on the rise compared to desktop and tablet searches. So since most people use their mobile devices to do research, you should have a mobile-friendly site so that you can obtain as much traffic as you can get. Once you have a mobile-friendly site, you will rank higher on the Google indexing rankings.

In one year, most searches were from a mobile device with 51.78% compared to a desktop at 43.65% and a tablet at 4.57%

Google has turned to a mobile-first indexing search engine, which means the top indexed sites are sites that are mobile-friendly and have that the mobile option for searchers on their page.

“…the lack of a mobile-friendly experience could impact negatively on the rankings of that site, and a site with a better mobile experience would potentially receive a rankings boost even for searchers on a desktop” (Randolph, 2018).

  1. Improving your bounce rate

The mobile bounce rate is high and people expect the page to load in 2 seconds or less. Since dwell time is a huge factor, the more people bounce, the worse it is for the mobile search ranking. So how can you improve your bounce rate?

  • Speed up your site

    • Google’s mobile speed test is a great way to see if your site has any speed issues. All you have to do is type in your URL and the tool will scan your site.

In order for your site to generate a lot of clicks, you need to have useful and relevant content that the searcher is looking for. According to Julia McCoy, Google ranks these pieces of content by their usefulness and relevancy to the user performing the search. So, for your site to have any SEO value at all, your content has to be helpful.

Creating audience-centric content should be what the company or site does to bring in customers. According from a table from the search engine journal, if you create content that your company wants to talk about then you will have little to no audience. But, if you create audience-centric content that your audiences want to hear then you will have a large audience. The difference between the two is that audience-centric content identify’s an audience first and then creates content for them while content-centric will do the opposite.

I hope you take in this information to make your site become top of the rankings! Below is a YouTube video that goes over the basics of SEO.
