Pros and Cons of Different Types of Podcasts
When starting a podcast you must consider what will work best for the kind of information you will be talking about and what will work best to engage your audience. In this article we will talk about the four different kinds of podcasts and what the pros and cons of them are. We will specifically look at interview, conversational, and monologue. These are all very popular forms of podcasts that do a great job at intriguing all kinds of audiences and conveying what the podcaster has to say.
Interview: Interview style is one of the most popular styles of podcasting. This style includes a host or hosts that speak with one or more guests in each episode.
Pros
Firstly it allows you to reach many new audiences. This is because as you bring in different kinds of guests they will pull in their audience as well. This can be done by the guest posting on social media about being on the host’s podcast. This has the potential to bring in many different audiences to your podcast.
The second is that it allows you to have different content much like the first pro. This style allows you to have a variety of different content with every guest you bring into the interview. You could have athletes, artists, scholars, or business people that will all have different opinions and things to talk about. This also allows you to continue to find new audiences.
Cons
One of the largest difficulties people have with interview style podcasting is booking guests. As a new podcast it can be very hard to find and book guests that will be intriguing or high profile enough for your audience to toon in constantly. This may be a long process to get right but plenty of people have been able to do it.
The second con is having to work on others schedules. You have to be able to be flexible to the guests and coordinate with them. This can be extremely difficult because at times you may be talking to a manager and not the actual guests. The guest may also have a very busy schedule they may make them unavailable to work with.
Conversational: Conversational includes two or more hosts that will have entertaining conversations about different themes and topics.
Pros
If you have a really good rapport with you co-host it will be very easy to reach your target audience especially with intriguing topics. Some podcaster master this style and can make it so their audience feels as if they are involved in the conversation.
This style is also very fun for the listener. Conversational podcasts do a great job at keeping the listener engaged and interested in the conversation.
Cons
You have to be on the same page as your co-host or co-hosts. Everyone involved needs to be on board and be able to work together. This can be hard because you all need to have the same dedication to the podcast and work together to make schedules that work for everyone. you must choose the right person or people to work with if you wish for the podcast to succeed.
There are also complications when it comes to editing. When the amount of people increase in the podcast the higher the likely hood there is for over-talk and tangents from one of the hosts. This cause a lot of editing to have to take place. There can also be different opinions as to what should make the cut into the podcast during editing.
Monologue: Monologue is when there is one host the will speak for the entire podcast about a certain topic.
Pros
With the monologue podcast you only have to worry about yourself and have complete control over the podcast. This allows your to talk about whatever you wish and edit as you will. The only schedule you have to worry about is your own and you would feel very free as a creator.
This style allows you to build a better connection with your audience. This is because it is only one person as a host so their is no “fight” for attention. In this style to speak directly to your audience and they will feel something personal because of this.
Cons
It can be challenging to keep the conversation energy alive when you do not have anyone to bounce off of. This can cause your audience to lose interest and not want to come back time and time again.
This is also very challenging when you first being because if you are nervous behind the mic that will come through in the final product causing it to be kinda awkward for the listener. To mitigate this you should practice as much as possible to get comfortable behind the mic.
