NHL on Social Media
When looking at the national hockey league on social media you can see things they do well and not so well. Let's take a deeper look.
Instagram: On Instagram the nhl has 6.5 million followers and they are consistent with their posting. They post during big games, primarily nighttime/primetime games. During those games if a highlight play happens, they had a format of posting a slide post where they have a picture of the player and then you swipe and watch a video of the highlight. This is a good method to get players more followers on Instagram and get people to maybe tune into the game. On Instagram a lot of pages have success posting vintage/throwback content and i think the nhl could benefit from this trend. They should have a throwback Thursday segment where they post a throwback highlight/moment once a week.
Facebook: The nhl posts much of the same content on Facebook as they do on Instagram (minus the slide posting because that is not a feature). I think they should do the throwback on facebook as well because Facebooks users are primarily older so they would very much appreciate a blast from the past. On Facebook the nhl has 4.8 million followers. I imagine the drop off in followers from Instagram and Facebook comes from Instagram being a more popular app, there is not a lot the nhl can do about that.
X: On X the nhl is more casual and will sometimes make funny tweets/responses to tweets. X is a more casual/funny app so this is a good tactic by the nhl, but they should do it more often. They also retweet a lot of posts from teams in the nhl, the nhl has 6.9 million X followers (their most on any social media app) so these retweets are huge and get a lot of eyes onto not just the league as a whole, but specific teams.
Tik Tok: The nhl has 2.7 million Tik Tok followers and they do not post many highlights, moreso funny in game/pregame/post-game videos. Tik Tok is mainly an app where people want to see funny videos, so this is a good tactic by the nhl. They can be better at this though by keeping and aye out on trends and posting about those trends taking their own spin on it. The Brooklyn Nets do this on tik tok and it works well for them as they have amassed 2.3 million followers, almost as many as the entire nhl page. Once the nhl becomes more modern on tik tok this could be huge for them as a league.
