Meet Grayce Sullivan

Introduction and Expectations for the Class

Hello, my name is Grayce Sullivan and I am a sophomore communications major at Duquesne University with a minor in PR and advertising. I am taking this class because I want to have more knowledge about the field that I am thinking about going into. There is a lot I want to learn about media and how to have a good grasp on it. I complete my schoolwork to the best of my abilities. I want to get better at working with media, understanding how people perceive media, and how to effectively communicate via media. Something I am working hard to improve upon is time management and I want to bring that into 2024.

About Me

I am from an hour outside of the Pittsburgh area in Hermitage PA. I have four older brothers, two parents, two sisters-in-law, and my nephew. I went to a performing arts school for my high school experience where I majored in musical theatre and attended ASPIRE which is a music intensive at Berklee College of Music. Before that, I was homeschooled but growing up I loved dancing, singing, and theatre. I have various hobbies other than the ones I mentioned. My favorites are reading, swimming, traveling, listening to music, and watching movies//TV shows. It is ever-changing but my favorites right now are The Last of Us, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and always the Harry Potter franchise.

How I’ve Grown and How I Want to Move Forward

The arts continue to be my passion and they are something I want to tie into my degree. Over the summer I worked as a student employee at Westminster University. I acquired a lot of knowledge from this experience on running social media accounts, basic office skills, different media platforms, etc. Over the summer I got to be a nanny which forced me to grow in completely different ways. Through these recent experiences, I have learned more about patience, communication, and work ethic. I am proud of these skills and they are something I want to bring into the new year with me. I am excited to expand my knowledge with this class. Nice to meet you! ☔️

My Classwork

My blog The Importance of Inclusion in Digital Media was a new experience for me! Writing a blog about something I care so much about made me feel empowered. In this blog, I discussed what inclusion looks like in digital media and how to do it thoughtfully. I then gave examples of pieces of media that did it well. Films like 20th Century Fox’s Love, Simon, and Pixar’s Coco.

My blog, Media and Inclusion: Warby Parker is an article that describes the marketing strategies that Warby Parker displays while maintaining their inclusivity. They have many methods for doing this a few of them being influencer collabs, user-generated content, etc. They work hard to accomplish these things. This was an interesting topic to research.

TikTok and its uprising during the COVID-19 pandemic is a blog that discusses various topics about TikTok during lockdown. My blog discusses their target audience, the appeal of TikTok itself, and the misinformation that was spread on the app about the virus. I wanted this article to inform readers about what was occurring on the site during that time. The historical relevance of TikTok during the pandemic is a poignant piece of information that we can learn many lessons from.

What I Have Learned

This class taught me many valuable skills that I will use in the future. From writing the blogs, I was able to track the foot traffic each article received. I was excited to share my perspective, and I was able to do well through the things I learned in class. I learned how to make trackable links, created an editorial calendar, and wrote captions to increase the attention I got to my post. I learned that a few of my articles reached international distances and I noticed how using hashtags and creating trackable links aided my efforts. For our group assignment, the three biggest locations we reached were, the United States, Russia, and Germany! These assignments demonstrated the importance of digital analytics within a social media or marketing job. I was able to have a more extensive understanding of how to reach different types of people and these are skills that I will continue to use throughout my career.
