Meet Xavier Rice

My name is Xavier Rice. I am a Sophmore in the Sports Media & Information Major. I decided to take this course because it was required within my major. The way I approach school has varied over the years. Through High School, I mainly breezed by all my classes just doing the bare minimum to be able to pass. However, transitioning to Duquesne where we have much more serious stakes and requirements, I have had to learn to take my classes more seriously. Although difficult at times, being in a major I am interested in and having resources such as our Athletic Academic Advisors has made it a much easier adjustment for me. This class pertains to my future career path so I am eager to learn and grow during my time in this class.

Something I feel like people should know about me is I love fashion and being creative. After football I am going to create my own clothing company and bring my creative thoughts to life. Below are concepts of the name and what parts of my logo/the vibe of the brand could possibly look like

Through this course I would like to learn and get better at:

  • Marketing on Social Media

  • How to create professional websites

  • Learn about tools on platforms that I use regularly that I never knew about

Something that I learned in 2024 and will be bringing into this year is learning to embrace uncomfortable situations. The easiest thing to do is crave comfortability because it causes less stress or pain in the moment. However what college football has taught me especially, is how to be patient and embrace being uncomfortable. Being a quarterback, it can be difficult transitioning to the new landscape of college football and especially me being from California and having to move across the country while adjusting to everything else going on. Moving into this next season where I will have the opportunity to see more playing time, I've really tried to embrace my new role and become comfortable in situations I would have been uncomfortable in before. For example, I am extremely reserved and quiet so having to open up and communicate more with coaches and teammates has been something I've been working on. At the end of the day, the things most desirable in life never come easy so it is worth it to push through the things we don't want in order to end up receiving the results we do want.

Final Project Recap:

My final project was about creating a digital marketing strategy for how the Riverhounds can become a relevant force in the city of Pittsburgh. I explained different strategies and gave example of studies that have been done that can help the team grab the attention of the city. The assignments this semester helped me tremendously with learning how to gain exposure and track that growth across websites and social media. This is extremely helpful especially for teams like the Riverhounds who need more exposure and one of the easiest and most cost effective way to do this is through social media and links. If they can use their prime location along with strong ownership, a winning brand of soccer, and a heavy presence on social media, their path to success will become easier than it ever had been before!
