Meet Jocelyn Shahu
Intro
Hi Everyone! I’m Jocelyn and I am a double major in Integrated Marketing Communication and Strategic PR and Advertising (as well as working towards my business certificate). I’m in my junior year here at Duquesne and I have enjoyed every minute of it so far! When my advisor told me about this class, I was immediately intrigued as social media is such an integral part of our world today and seemed like something I really could use in my future career. I’m also part of various clubs, including PRSSA, Ad Club, National Society of Leadership and Success, and the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority.
These are some of my sorority sisters! I know it sounds so cliche, but these girls are truly my best friends. Joining Zeta has been such a rewarding experience all around. It has given me opportunities to raise money and awareness for a cause I hold dearly, Breast Cancer education and awareness, and allows me to carry leadership positions that I am passionate about.
This past year, I was the sorority’s Historian, where I was responsible for running their social media pages, gathering content through planned Media Days, and editing our philanthropy video. While I’m not a pro, it has helped me build the skills I have learned in the classroom and apply it in real life settings.

What I’ve Learned in 2023
2023 has brought so much change to my life. It was the first year I experienced life off campus and out of the dorms, and while I’ve lived away from home for the past 2 years, this was such a new experience. When you live in the dorms, you are constantly surrounded by people. While that is challenging for some, I absolutely loved it. I have more of an extroverted personality and I always wanted to be around people. Now that I live off campus, I have my own room, and some of my friends are no longer just a dorm room away. At first, I struggled being alone. The first semester off campus, however, taught me the importance of time alone but also how to prioritize your friends. You simply cannot see them out of convenience anymore, but instead you make true effort to see those people. I have more of an appreciation for the balance between my alone time and quality time with my friends.

2 Things I Learned Through My Work
This class offered a space to acquire new and valuable skills that I had not previously learned in any other class. Although I have learned strategy planning to some extent, ADPR 303 expanded upon my understanding and I was able to apply it to real brands and even my own content through Persue & Persuade. You can read my example of a digital strategy here, or by clicking the link above about Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood. I am also grateful to have learned SEO and website optimization through this class, as I was just asked in an interview if I had any experience working with these concepts. Although this was not listed in the job posting and did not seem like I was going to work with these skills, it turned out to be very prominent in my field, and I was able to discuss the experience I had with SEO and website optimization through my work in Persue & Persuade.
