Meet Spencer Thomas
Hi! My name is Spencer Thomas, and I am a second semester junior majoring in Sports Information and Media, and I am minoring in English. My goal after graduation is to become a sportswriter, where I get to go awesome places, meet interesting people, and tell amazing stories.
At Duquesne, I have done work with Duquesne Student Television, as well as with the student campus newspaper, The Duquesne Duke. At the Duke, I started as a staff writer my freshman year, where I wrote almost every week. My sophomore year I became the editor of the sports section, where I got a step up both in responsibly but also in eduction and familiarity with the media industry. I remain in that role now, in my third semester with the position.
Outside of Duquesne, I interned with Cleveland Guardians Baseball Insider, a website that covered the minor league affiliates of the Guardians. Las fall, I interned with the Pittsburgh Penguins ass a staff writer, where I wrote pieces that were published on the teams website.
One thing I learned at that job was the importance of communication, and that’s something I am going to carry with me into my professional career. I saw the digital team, public relations team and more all working together in weekly content meetings that culminated in a polished product that the audience sees.
I am looking forward to this class because it seems to have a very modern and engaged approach to marketing and audience awareness, which is an incredibly important thing for anyone who hopes to go into the media fields to be good at. When I was with the Penguins, I got to learn from professionals, including the content team that is in charge of the social media for accounts with millions and millions and followers. I’m interested to learn even more and expand what I know about this field.
