The Rise of Making Podcasts

Podcasting has been something that has continued to grow over the last few years but if there was one thing that not only been able to survive during the pandemic but have a massive growth during this time. One big thing that shows its growth is the amount of ad revenue generated by podcasting is projected to hit $2 billion dollars in 2023 according to Nielsen. Spotify even plans to invest 500 million dollars in 2019. This shows that many people are starting up podcasts from celebrities, to businesses, to regular people like you or me. Making a podcast is something that not only is becoming more common but a lot easier to do. The Verge gives a quick introductory video on how podcasts have started to grow since they were first created.

Why are Podcasts on the Rise?

Podcasts popularity has skyrocketed over the last few years and judging by the reasons I can understand why which include:

  • When you create a podcast, you are making genuine authentic content that can be listened to and related well with the audience because there is no scripting or acting in a podcast so it will create a more genuine reaction that people will enjoy and want to come back to listen to more of what you do. It also helps with brands as well because podcasts promote authenticity which is becoming a common trait for people and businesses in this most recent generation according to the University of Texas at Austin.

  • Life as we know tends to get very busy as we are constantly doing things everyday of our lives, and we usually have some form of audio playing in our ears because of enjoyment/relaxation and podcasts are perfect for busy people. It is an easy way to learn something else when we are dealing with our tedious errands, job, or chores that we must do in our daily life. It works overall better than using videos because the engagement is with your eyes and ears which would make multitasking harder which is why podcasts are considered way more convenient than using videos.

  • “With education, podcasts can also help listeners learn more about topics that interest them. They can also pick up information related to the industry they work in, gain valuable insights for school exam subjects, or learn a new skill.” (Maiorca, MUO). Knowledge is something that is incredibly valuable as podcasts help teach a skill while also talking you through the process. This is always important because you can apply this information with the second point because you can learn while also doing something else.

Still Are Far from Perfect

While podcasts are something that can be very easy to start up promoting the content is a massive challenge because podcasts don’t appear in search results. This means that you cannot use any form of SEO for promoting your podcasts. It also has stiff competition with YouTube because content on YouTube is considered more engaging to the viewers because video content tells a story and packs a variety of information in the span of 10-20 minutes.

The Time is Now to Start!

Since 2005 from when podcasts were officially born, they have evolved, and everyone is doing it now and because the pandemic created a spike the time is now to try and create your own podcast. All you need is a microphone, a recording software, and an idea in your head and then you can get to creating a podcast. The setup is easy an honestly when you are making videos with more than one person podcasts can feel relaxing and an overall great experience. With podcasts if you can market well with them, you can also turn the podcasts into videos with recording software like OBS Studio or other free recording software. So what are you waiting for you see everyone trying out a podcast in their spare time and it’s something anyone can do for fun or for their own business.
