Why a Mobile-First marketing strategy?
The world practically revolves around our phones…
Mobile-First
“Today, mobile is the primary platform for most activities like online search, entertainment and purchases. People spend more than 3.5 hours on mobile devices every day, keeping in mind that everyone wants to target the mobile-first market.”
The Next Scoop, 2023
Statistics show the rapid increase in mobile phone usage worldwide…we need to keep up with the people.
What is Mobile-First marketing anyway?
Mobile first marketing puts mobile users as your top priority in hopes that majority of your audience is viewing your website/app on a mobile device rather than a desktop. Therefore, it aims to create content that is designed for mobile devices.
Why take a Mobile-First approach?
Increase consumer reach
As we all know, mobile device usage has significantly increased rapidly in the past 10-20 years! Almost everyone you know a mobile device whether it's an iPhone or android…they have one (even my grandparents). “In fact, to put a figure on it… 65% of traffic all to eCommerce sites, for example, in 2019 was via smartphones. And that number is only going one direction” (Adlum, G, 2020).
How to perfect a Mobile-First marketing strategy:
Simplicity
Less is always more. Especially when it comes to trying to navigate something on your phone when there is limited screen space, cellular data being used and content to be read. People go to their phones for quick, simple information so it’s best to keep your web design that way as well to provide the most satisfactory experience to your consumers. If someone is just quickly browsing your app/website, it is important that they understand the purpose of it so keeping things simple allows you to get straight to the point without any confusion and can provide more meaningful interactions with content.
2. Optimize videos and images
“A picture is worth a thousand words.” - Frederick R. Barnard
Videos are capable of delivering a lot of information in a short amount of time without requiring users to read anything...which no one wants to read long paragraphs if they don’t have to. Videos are capable of lengthening the amount of time someone spends viewing a website which can decrease bounce rate and increase sales! When it comes to mobile marketing, the customers are unable to physically interact with the product that is being sold, therefore the importance of visual cues increases greatly. When it comes to ecommerce, “we rely primarily on visual cues to establish the quality and value of an item before we buy” (Nahai, Nathalie, 2017). Choosing the right
3. Use a responsive design
This is KEY to a mobile first website! Why? A responsive web design allows your content to adapt to differently sized devices depending on what device your users are using. This will ensure that the content translates effectively from device to device no matter what so photos, grids, headings, etc all look their best and are easy to navigate. A website that is easy to navigate and doesn’t impose any issues with first time users, “tend to be perceived as more trustworthy,” (Nahai, Nathalie, 2017) which can make or break a decision to come back to the website again.
