Tracking My Biography Blog
For our second assignment I was tasked with using Google Analytics to collect data about my biography blog. I created two trackable links to my biography using Google’s Campaign URL Builder. The first link was posted on my LinkedIn profile and the second was sent out to a bunch of my email contacts. Both links tracked the number of clicks that my blog received from the link. After about a week of waiting for my results to show up they eventually appeared, and I was able to compare the two links and their findings.
To start, my traceable email link ended up being clicked on 9 times and had an average engagement time per user of 52 seconds. While it had no returning users I feel like the 52 seconds of engagement is a very good number. To me it means my blog was short enough to keep peoples attention yet interesting enough to keep them engaged. My email was definitely more successful when compared to my LinkedIn post. I ended up receiving 3 clicks on my LinkedIn link. Considering I posted the link to just my connections on LinkedIn I wasn’t surprised to see a low number of clicks. However I am wondering why Google Analytics shows that each click had a user engagement time of 0 seconds. I am inferring that the users that viewed the link may have disallowed cookies or had something on their browser preventing analytics from being collected. But either way it was still exciting to see that a few people took the time to click on my blog. After learning the results of both methods I believe I could apply what I have learned to the next time I use analytics. Next time if I am looking to gather the most accurate results I will focus more on email promotion of my blog since that was what worked best for me. I will also look into the reasoning behind why my LinkedIn numbers were so low.
Besides the results I believe one of the most important things I learned while completing this assignment was how to use Google Analytics. Going into the project I had actually never heard of the program, so it was a new experience for me. However, I now feel familiar enough with the program to potentially use it again in the future.
