Meet John Dyke

Favorite Quote: A wise person should have money in their head, but not in their heart. -- Jonathan Swift

Hi, I’m John Dyke, a senior majoring in Digital Marketing and Analytics with a minor in Professional Selling. I’m taking a social media class because I recognize how important these platforms are in today’s marketing world. Social media isn’t just about posting content; it’s about building strategies, creating authentic connections, and using data to drive meaningful results.

I’ve always been interested in how creativity and analytics work together to tell a brand’s story, and this class is the perfect way to refine those skills. Platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and LinkedIn play such a huge role in marketing campaigns, and I want to understand how to use them effectively.

When it comes to school projects, I like to combine creative ideas with practical, data-driven approaches. I focus on making sure my work is both visually appealing and backed by research, which I think is essential for success in marketing.

Something people might not know about me is that I’m a musician. I play guitar and piano, and music has always been a big part of my life. It’s taught me how to be creative and stay focused, which helps me in school and other parts of my life.

This semester, I want to get three main things from this social media class. First, I want to learn how to create campaigns that really connect with people and get their attention. Second, I want to understand how to use analytics to see what’s working and what’s not. Third, I hope to practice working on real projects that will prepare me for my career in marketing.

One thing I learned in 2024 that I want to bring into this year is how important it is to adapt. Social media is always changing, and I’ve realized that being flexible and open to new ideas is key.

2 Things I learned in this Course:

I think one of the greatest things I took away from this course was using outside sources to help validate your own thoughts. In many reports I utilized Pew Research and google analytics to support my arguments. I was able to do research and at times gather graphics which also made the statistics visually appealing. It also helped in Group work during the google analytics project I was able to learn how to make graphs from the statistics. Overall outside sources doesn’t mean stealing ideas from others but rather using their data to support your own findings. Another thing I found useful was using and implementing squarespace. I had never had experience making my own web pages and blogs before which was a really cool experience. I felt the website offered so many tools and resources to make your content look better. I also like checking the preformance of my own blogs using google analytics. Overall the course was very helpful and helped guide me to what I want to do with my future in buisness after college.
