6 Tips to Start a Podcast
Podcasts are becoming more and more dominant in media. What’s most challenging about podcasts is starting one and getting consistent viewers. Podcasts are personal and vary from different content. Streaming services like Spotify and iTunes are investing more time and money into podcasts as they become more popular amongst listeners.
The hardest part about having a podcast is starting one. Here are six helpful tips to help you start your process.
1. Pick an interesting topic
With podcasts, you need to pick an interesting topic. Not just to lure in listeners, but you need to find a topic that you are passionate about. If you are passionate about a topic, start there, and everything else will come to you.
2. Build your brand
Create a logo and a catchy title. This is a must. Once you have your topic, picking a name and creating a logo is important because this is what listeners are going to see when they browse podcasts. If your logo doesn't stand out, people will scroll past it.
3. Choose you content
Have creative content. Don’t do the same things for every episode. Maybe one day do voicemails. Try to change things up time to time to keep listeners on their toes. If you keep doing the same thing episode to episode, listeners will grow tired and move on. With this, also knowing what works and what doesn't is super important. Find out from listeners what they like and don’t like and go from there.
4. Plan ahead
Planning out what you are doing before you record is a must. You don’t have to have everything written down word for word, but having bullet points of stories you’re going to share, segments, etc. is important to have.
5. Know your audience
Know who your audience is. Trying to get everyone into your podcast is a challenging task. When you narrow it down, you will get loyal listeners. Once you get your loyal listeners, everything will follow into place.
6. Record & Equipment
A beginner’s mistake is not pressing the record button. Do soundchecks before recording to make sure everything is ready. It is better to have a problem before you record then finding out after the a microphone wasn’t on. Mistakes do happen, but always edit your work before you send it out.
Bonus: Have Fun
Enjoy doing this! When you enjoy it, the podcast is 10 times better and won’t seem like a job. When you are having fun, you’re more authentic, and viewers will feel like they are apart of the podcast and will continue to listen.
